IKEA U.S. has completed the solar roof on its new Joliet distribution center, the largest such rooftop in the state, company officials said.

For months, the center has been under construction in the Laraway Crossings Business Park, near Laraway Road and Route 53.

With its completion, IKEA now boasts three of the largest solar rooftop installations in Illinois, according to a press release. (The other two stores so equipped are in Bolingbrook and Schaumburg.)

The center’s 268,920-square-foot solar array consists of a 2.85 megawatt system, built with 9,036 panels, that will produce about 3,377,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually for the facility — equivalent to eliminating 2,513 tons of carbon dioxide or the emissions of 538 cars, or the electricity for 377 homes yearly, the release stated.

“Investing in sustainable solutions is a vital part of our business model,” Lars Petersson, IKEA U.S. president, said. “IKEA aims to create a sustainable life for communities where we are located, and the Joliet distribution center is a shining example of that goal.”

IKEA owns and operates all the solar systems on its buildings and has allocated $2.5 billion globally to invest in renewable energy through 2020.

Consistent with its goal of being energy-independent by 2020, IKEA has installed more than 700,000 solar panels on buildings across the world and owns approximately 300 wind turbines, including 104 in the U.S. — 49 of which are in downstate Hoopeston, the company said.

The 1.25 million-square-foot distribution center under construction in Joliet will enhance the IKEA distribution network with a central location receiving Asian and European goods from coastal ports, according to the company.

The company plans to build a similarly sized facility on 62 acres adjacent to the one now being built but the timing of that project has yet to be determined.

IKEA is a Swedish firm that offers home furnishings at more than 410 stores in 49 countries, including 46 in the U.S.
